Making a difference to a small project that has integrity
Life Community Baptist Church first became involved with Word of Life Ministries in 2002, Scott Carr visited Kisumu to help local pastors who needed some training. He met James Osare and his wife Rose that year and was immediately impressed by their passion and honesty.

James Osare Rose Osare

James is very well respected amongst both the church and civic communities as a man of integrity and great faith. Some years before this, he and his wife founded a small orphanage and school which serves the poorest in their community. Like many other pastors James was greatly effected by seeing so many AIDS and malaria orphans in the community. Many of them becoming street children, cut off from society, reduced to begging and thievery. He and Rose opened their home to one or two at first then a few more and now many children. Now they care for 46 children! Some of the ex-pupils act as adult volunteer carers and even teachers at the school.

A Growing Community
Word of Life is many things. An orphanage, a school, a family, a community, and even a church. Since we’ve known James we have been attempting to help support their work, mainly in two key ways:

  • Building for growth

  • Helping them to build a better infrastructure. Initially the school and home was based around a mud hut compound with around 30 children squashed into two small rooms. With the frequency of malaria around the Kisumu area this meant that there was often fatalities amongst the children. The old accommodation didn’t provide any protection against the mosquito.

    The old accommodation

In February 2005, the community finished some brick built housing for the children, 4 rooms and a store/kitchen, and are currently working on a pharmacy, workshop and special accommodation for the under 5’s. Previously a water bore was provided and a new toilet block has also helped.

  • Healthier Children

  • Now all the current orphans aged between 3 months and 16 have English sponsors and a regular amount is going out to help Rose, (the mamma) plan and provide a better diet for the children. Milk, meat and fruit as well as rice are provided. Also, this extra income means that individual children are clothed well, have better opportunities for education and medical treatment and even have a few toys! Since 2003 when the sponsorship scheme started, the change in the children has been dramatic.
