God’s masterpiece

One of the things I’ve enjoyed over the past few months is seeing people in our community share their creativity with others: stunning nature photos on social media and joyful paintings by children in the windows, the inspirational words of poetry and the uplifting melodies of online musical collaborations, the humour of jokes that lighten the mood and the deliciousness of home baked cakes. All of these things and more have given us great delight during the difficulties of life in lockdown.

When I think of creativity in the Bible, I’m reminded of Ephesians 2:10, which says we are God’s handiwork, his workmanship, his masterpiece. But we’re not purchased and forgotten, like a beautiful picture hung excitedly on the wall, now gathering dust and rarely appreciated. No, each and every one of us is trending in God’s story. The Bible says that God delights in us (Psalm 19:10), rejoices over us with gladness (Zephaniah 3:17), crowns us with beauty (Isaiah 62:3-5), and takes pleasure in those who hope in his steadfast love (Psalm 147:11). And even if you’re feeling a little unloved or worn out at the moment, falling apart at the seams and in needed of some gentle restoration, know that God is not just the master craftsman but also the master restorer too.

So next time you look in the mirror or take a selfie on your phone, remember that you are an expression of God’s creativity, deeply treasured and eternally loved.
