This week, Don will be starting our new teaching series, Faithfulness in a new normal. We’ll be reading through the Book of Daniel, discovering the faithfulness of Daniel and his friends, as they entered into their “new normal”. We’ll see their commitment to God through life defining moments, we’ll see their devotion to God through prayer, and we’ll see visions of God’s sovereignty over the kingdoms of the Earth. I pray that during this series you will Encounter God in fresh new ways as we enter our New Normal, I pray that you will Grow in Faith, as a faithful disciple of Jesus, and I pray that you will Make a Difference in the lives of those on your frontlines.

To prepare for the series, I encourage you to read through Daniel in your Bible, or listen to it in an Audio Bible.
Read the introduction and chapter 1 in our book for the series, Faithful Discipleship in a Foreign Land by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson. Read it online for free, buy it as a paperback from Amazon or read it on a Kindle (and if you’ve got Kindle Unlimited, it’s free).

As an introduction to the book, think for a moment about what you already know about the Book of Daniel? If you haven’t already watched it, the Bible Project’s video on Daniel is a great overview of the book.

Can you think of a time when you had a big transition in your life, such as leaving home for the first time heading to university, moving to live in a whole a new place or starting a new job. What did you discover about the differences between your old culture and your new culture? Where you able to stay faithful to Jesus in the transition?

Daniel and his friends all had their names changed when they arrived in Babylon, from Hebrew names to Babylonian names (1v6-7). What do you think that would have been like for them? What impact would it have on their sense of identity?

Why do you think Daniel took a stand in asking permission not to eat the royal food and drink the royal wine (1v8)?

When have you taken a stand, going against the flow of your culture, in order to be faithful to Jesus?

Daniel and his friends grew in wisdom and understanding, and excelled in their work (1v18-20). In terms of the LICC’s 6Ms, they were “Making Good Work”. Since there is dignity and value in the everyday tasks we do, how can we be faithful to God on our frontlines?

Read Fashioned for Good, and reflect on ways you’ve seen God working through your life over the long term.

Now pray for the week ahead, that you might remain faithful to Jesus in our journey into the new normal. Speak Lord, for your servants are listening.
