We continue our teaching series, this week, exploring biblical justice being rooted in the very character of God and it is the outworking of that character, which is never less than just. This week we focus on the Exodus story where God takes His people from bondage to freedom. In God’s compassion and grace for the suffering of His people,  He not only sees and listens to their suffering but He is moved to take action to liberate them from the great injustice of slavery. Find out how the story of Exodus is not just about liberating people but brings transformation, healing and hope for all.

• The series is based on the book Embracing Justice by Isabelle Hamley (ISBN: 9780281086542), available for purchase online from Eden or Amazon and on order at local bookshops.

• Free weekly small group resources are available from Home Groups, with each session including a 20 min video conversation, Biblical passages to explore and discussion questions around the theme of the week.

• The Big Church Read are also offering weekly discussion starters, each introduced by a short video’s from the author.

• Live Lent have produced a series of daily Bible readings and weekly challenges, available as a free app for Apple and Android devices, free daily email reflections, as audio on a smart speaker, or as a printed booklet available for purchase.

Questions for Reflection

1. Are there any groups you can identify whose identity is shaped as ‘other’ in
   public imagination around you?
2. What power do you personally have in terms of shaping what other people
   think, and how they are treated? What about the different systems that you are
   part of, at work, at church, in the family?
3. When have you felt ‘other’ or invisible? How does this experience shape your
   understanding of justice?
4. What can you see around you that speaks of justice and injustice? How
   comfortable do you feel making a judgement on what is just or not?
5. There is a project in 50 countries called The Human Library. Instead of books,
   you can borrow a person you would not normally meet and listen to their story.
   Who might you borrow and why? How might seeing and hearing their story
   change you?
6. God’s response is first and foremost one of compassion for his suffering people;
   who do you feel instinctive compassion for? How could you help others share
   in this?
7. Does Pharaoh’s story help us understand why we are sometimes fearful of, or
   push back against, those who ask for redress in the face of discrimination?
8. Can you think of one habit you might take up that may help you live more justly
   or sustainably?
